Anti Hair Loss Treatment

It is important to differentiate between hair fall and hair loss. Hair loss can only be treated with hair transplant, while hair fall can be managed with various medications. It is important to note that these medicines take 4-6 weeks to start their action and the effects only persist as long as these medicines are taken. The treatments advised are -
  1. Minoxidil – a liquid solution of minoxidil commonly available as Mintop is the most effective in managing hair loss. It is available in 2%, 5%, and 10% strengths. A step ladder pattern is advised, implying starting from the lowest strength, and then shifting the next over a period of time. Most patients respond to 2% very well, making the use of  5 %  and 10 % unnecessary in most . minoxidil acts by increasing the blood flow to the scalp, allowing better nourishment to the hair roots, reducing their fall, and increasing their thickness. This is very safe, apart from occasional rashes and allergies.

  2. Finasteride – available in tablet form. This is advised in a dose of 1 mg alternate nights. The mode of action is the anti testosterone action of finasteride. The active agent responsible for hair loss at a molecular level is DHT ( Dihydro testosterone). Finasteride blocks the action of DHT , allowing decrease in hair fall and increasing thickness of existing hair. Occasional side effects such as decrease in libido may be noted, stopping the drug, reverses the side effects in 6 weeks.

  3. HAIR MAX – laser devices have been used to decrease hair fall. Though a definite scientific basis for its use is awaited, it continues to enjoy popularity as a convenient and safe method to decrease  hair fall. This is easily available across the counter.

  4. PRP mesotherapy – use of Platelet Rich Plasma mesotherapy is being used in some centers, The treatment is controversial, requires long treatment schedule, is painful, and the benefits are debatable.
